 Entrepreneurship highlights the importance of identifying and developing the entrepreneurial skills and traits that are necessary for employment, self-employment and entrepreneurial pursuits.

Introduction

It is well understood that to successfully adapt to and compete in a changing workforce, young adults must be able to create their own opportunities. Understanding entrepreneurship, and recognising and developing their entrepreneurial and business skills will give students the flexibility and confidence to do so. ‘Entrepreneurship’ introduces students to the mindset and traits that are necessary for successful employment, self-employment and entrepreneurial pursuits. This module covers creativity and innovation, Intrapreneurship, social entrepreneurship, exploring small business opportunities and creating and pitching a business plan.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module students should::

  • Understand the concept of entrepreneurship and its importance in the workforce
  • Understand the traits that are consistent to entrepreneurial drive and success
  • Identify, explore and develop their own entrepreneurial traits
  • Evaluate their business skills
  • Understand the role of Intrapreneurs and the benefits of Intrapreneurship in providing experience, networking and security
  • Understand the benefits of social enterprise and its role in addressing local and global issues
  • Explore the creative process and practice their innovative skills
  • Recognise entrepreneurial opportunities
  • Know where to seek information, advice, financial assistance and grants
  • Be aware of the risks and rewards of entrepreneurship
  • Know the difference between an entrepreneur and a business operator
  • Evaluate their own motives and preparedness for self-employment
  • Understand the basics of starting a small business
  • Understand small business structures and types
  • Develop a Minimum Viable Product (MVP)
  • Create and develop a business plan for a small business
  • Give a business pitch
