Introduction

The idea of a permanent full-time job or a ‘job for life’ is fast becoming an idea of the past. The changing nature of the workforce means that the freelancer or independent contractor is on the rise. Today’s technology and expanded internet access have created the freedom to work from home, a hub or almost anywhere. There has never been a better opportunity for self-employment, and there has never been a better opportunity for young entrepreneurs to forge their own career.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module students should:

  • Be aware of the changing dynamics of the workforce and the opportunities for self-employment
  • Understand some of the advantages and disadvantages of self-employment
  • Understand some of the considerations for self-employment (support, commitment, support, financial preparedness, etc.)
  • Be aware of the types of funding options to explore
  • Understand some of the basic aspects that are crucial to the success of running a small business or working from home
