Introduction

‘Work Skills’ aims to provide students with an understanding of the employ ability skills required for entry into and effective involvement in the workplace. Being able to identify their skills is the first step towards improvement and the learning of new skills. Classroom workshops and activities in this module provide practical strategies for developing and demonstrating these. Being able to communicate skills by describing and discussing them will help students to identify appropriate careers, negotiate the job market, apply for positions, write a powerful CV and interview effectively. The skills covered in this module include the personal, interpersonal and transferable skills that employers most seek.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module students should:

  • Understand different skills and their importance in all aspects of life
  • Identify the skills needed for effective participation in the workplace
  • Identify and evaluate their own skills and strengths so they can list their work competencies
  • Match their skills and competencies to those employers seek, and highlight and communicate these using examples from their own experiences
  • Understand that skills are an asset that can be improved with practise, and employ the strategies to develop and improve them
  • Display a willingness to embrace diversity and an open mind to other ideas, cultures and beliefs
  • Employ effective time management strategies
